Taking inspiration from the theme proposed in 2017 by the United Nations for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the APEW-ODV proposes the following as the theme for the Award: THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES. DISABILITY AND TRANSFORMATION FOR AN INCLUSIVE SOCIETY.
The way a society treats disabled people is an indicator of the attitude of society towards all its members, such as minors, the elderly, prisoners, the needy, the unemployed, immigrants, single-parent families. The attention paid to even just one of these components, such as disability, can play a beneficial role in dragging up and making society more attentive to all its members. Attention to disability therefore transcends disabled people themselves, and becomes a reason for transformation in society as a whole. Disabled people, with their courage to face the difficult daily life, point the way towards a path of resilience, whereby everything becomes possible and barriers can fall, as long as the process is supported by trust in the community and adequate resources. Disabled people themselves, with active participation in civil life, can contribute to the transformation of society.
